Selecting the right shoes

Wearing comfortable shoes that fit well is a key part of taking care of your feet, and your entire body. Uncomfortable, ill-fitting shoes can actually throw off your posture, leading to backaches - in addition to sore feet.

Alternating the shoes you wear is important, too. Shoes absorb moisture while you wear them and need sufficient time - at least 24 hours - to fully dry out before they are worn again.

Tips for buying the right shoes

For happy, healthy feet keep the following tips in mind when selecting new shoes:

  • Always have both your feet measured. With time, your feet can change some, and they might be different sizes, too.
  • your feet are different sizes, buy shoes to fit the larger foot.
  • You'll immediately notice if a shoe feels good or not. Don't believe a salesperson's speech about shoes getting more comfortable with wear.
  • Because feet swell a little during the day, it's best to shop for shoes in the afternoon or evening.
  • When standing, shoes should be about half an inch (1.3 cm) longer than your big toe.
  • Make sure to walk around when trying on shoes. Pay special attention to the fit on the heel, which should be snug enough to prevent the shoe from slipping up and down.
